KONARK
(19° 53’ Latitude and 86° 06’ Longitude) is a small village in Puri district situated on the sea coast of Odisha. The place is well connected by good motorable roads from Bhubaneswar and Puri. The place is sacred and famous for Sun temple. Konark is one of the principal kshetras mentioned in Kapila Samhita. It is otherwise called Arka-kshetra meaning thereby corner and the sun respectively, hence the etymology corner Sun.
The temple is grand in conception, great even in its ruins stands with the disfigured beauty in a desolate track. The sea is 3 kilometers to the south-east of the temple side and dried up river Chandrabhaga is noticed in its close proximity. Chandrabhaga originally a branch of sacred Prachi river had on its bank flourishing towns and villages containing massive temples. On the Magha saptami day people from all over the country flock to this river for a holy dip and pay homage to sun god. This tradition has its continuity till today.
